Money Musings: Be your own money coach đź‘Ź
It’s the last week in January. We’re passed the point where most people gave up on their New Year’s resolutions.
Your shiny 2022 money goals might feel like they’re already off the hinges.
If this resonates (or you want some extra motivation to press on!) here’s the plan:
I’m excited to introduce you to your new money coach.
YOU.
Yep. You.
I know, you don’t have time for a new role BUT I promise this won’t be too much of a burden and will pay off big time (pun intended).
Here’s what you need to do as your own financial coach:
Cheer yourself on. Most of us do not cheer ourselves on, let alone say nice things at all. Channel my son putting on his own shoes - "you’re doing great! Wow!"
Learn from your mistakes. We are all going to make mistakes. The key is that a financial coach will make sure you learn from them. They’ll have you evaluate why it happened and help you improve for next time. It all comes from a non-judgmental place - this is key!
Treat yourself with kindness (and forgiveness). There are SO many things working against us when it comes to our financial lives. Because you’re reading this, I know you’re doing amazing! Treat yourself that way.
Map out small consistent steps. Map out the (small and manageable) money moves you’d like to make over the next 3 months. If any feel too daunting, break them down even further. If you want some help (and 15 steps!), join the Financial Adulting challenge by preordering the book.
Schedule check-ins. When you work with a coach, you’ll have scheduled time to check in on your plan and progress. You’ll want to do this with yourself via money parties. I like to have them monthly, but you can have them more frequently, too!
That’s it! That’s what you’ll need to be your own money coach. Money coaches take our plans and turn them into a reality. I’m excited to hear how it goes!
PS If you want to learn and do more, the last chapter of Financial Adulting is called Become Your Own Money Coach! In it, I give you a monthly, quarterly and annual money party checklist as well as tips to keep your motivation up.
MONEY MOVE OF THE WEEK
FIND YOUR FRUGAL JOYS.
Frugal joys are free or inexpensive things that make us really happy. They are great for 1) adding joy to our lives without increasing how much we spend or 2) swapping out more expensive activities with free or inexpensive ones to save money (without losing the joy). Win, win. 🤗
If COVID or the winter weather have you staying in more than normal, here are some of your favorite "stay at home" frugal joys.
This week, I challenge you to choose one frugal joy per day. If that feels overwhelming, start with one for the week. I can’t wait to hear how it goes!
YOU GOTTA SEE THIS
BRING THE FISCAL FEMME TO YOUR COMPANY.
In honor of my new book, Financial Adulting, I’m offering workshops and talks at a major discount - in exchange for book preorders. Women’s History Month is right around the corner, making it a popular time to hire women-owned businesses (me!) to come speak about financial well-being.
My newest talk and most popular choice for 2022 is "Make 2022 The Year of Financial Adulting," and a favorite from last year is my "7 Steps to Financial Wellbeing" workshop, but I'm happy to work with you and fine tune the focus of my session to align with any of your current internal initiatives.
If you’d like to bring me into your company, hit reply (or forward this to the right place) and we can set up a time to chat.
