Money Musings: We stand with the Black community

Money Musings 💭 We stand with the Black community

We can't talk about getting women wealthy without talking about racial justice. Personal finance and inequity are inextricably linked.

It would take 228 years for Black families to amass as much wealth as white families if our current policies stay in place.

The world of money and personal finance is entirely different for Black people, and even more so for Black women. When we look at history through present day, we find hundreds of years of lack of access, destruction of wealth, bias, discrimination, pay gaps, and wealth gaps. The list goes on and on.

This quote really resonates with me: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” - Desmond Tutu

To our Black members in the Fiscal Femme community - please know this is a safe space where you can share what you are feeling and experiencing.

To our non-Black members in the Fiscal Femme community - we can and need to do better. I can and need to do better. Let’s listen, learn, share resources, and take action. I’ve included a list of resources gathered from all of you below.

“It is the obligation of the people that have created and perpetuate and benefit from a system of oppression to be the ones that dismantle it. So that’s on us.” - Joaquin Phoenix (in an acceptance speech for an award that had no Black nominees).

The more Black women and actively anti-racist women who build individual wealth, the more we’ll see the institutional changes, changes in leadership, and changes in policy this country desperately needs.

MONEY MOVE OF THE WEEK

Take this quiz before making a purchase. Many of you were hopeful that your spending was going to decrease due to stay-at-home orders, but you’ve been surprised to see that’s not always the case. The main culprit for most is online shopping.

We’re stressed, we’re sad, we’re bored - and we’re trying to make our time at home more enjoyable and comfortable. How can we make sure our purchases are conscious and intentional rather than retail therapy we’ll regret?

I partnered up with Clasp to bring you a free, fun, five-question quiz to go through before making a purchase. You’ll get our recommendation in the results so you can feel good about your spending decision.

Anti-racist resources. Please continue to add this list - it’s by no means exhaustive.
