Money Musings 💭 financial feminists unite 👊
I spent last week in Washington D.C. at an event called FinCon which brings together 2,500 personal finance nerds, media, and brands for a week of content, schmoozing, and celebrating. This might sound like a personal hell for many 🤣but despite the overwhelm, I had a great time connecting with fellow financial feminists (they do exist!) and learning about the latest financial technologies and products.
While there were many takeaways, a Q&A with Jean Chatzky stood out to me. She talked about compassion and money. One of the things that drives me crazy about the personal finance world is all the judgment and dogma - experts looking down on us because we can’t control our spending 🙄 or even because value different things. Enough of this! 🤬
One of the really exciting shifts I’m seeing is that we, the individuals, are getting a voice. Our power is growing. 👊 We get to choose who we listen to, what companies we interact with and I see that we’re demanding higher standards of integrity, equality and compassion.
I’m so honored to be part of this badass community of Fiscal Femmes. Thank you for choosing to spend part of your Wednesdays with me. 🙏
Money Move of the Week
Have a money party. Spend an hour and a half or so every two weeks showing your money some love. Look back at your spending, check in on your goals, and tackle any non-urgent financial to-dos (negotiate away a fee, cancel a subscription, or finally roll over your 401(k)). I call it a party for a reason. Make it fun with your favorite beverage , some music , or comfy PJs. And don’t forget to reward yourself when you’re done.
You Gotta See This
Native Women’s Equal Pay Day is September 23rd. That means Native women (American Indian and Alaska Native women) must work until September 23rd into this year to make what White men made at the end of last year. They earn $0.58 on the dollar of White, non-hispanic men. If you’re interested in joining the conversation, there will be social media chats that day at 2 pm EST on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook with the hashtags - #NativeWomensEqualPay to #DemandMore #Equity.
