Money Musings 💭 we have work to do
Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder.
His murder was a turning point for many people and organizations to begin to understand the tragic racial inequities in the United States. It was also a time for folks like myself to look at how our actions (my actions) and inaction have continued to perpetuate and uphold values of white supremacy.
June 2020 was when, as Dr. Cadet taught me, I started really doing the work.
I didn’t realize until recently that I wasn’t always a true feminist. I was a white feminist and I failed to address and work toward ending the oppression and discrimination of BIPOC women.
Believe me, I still have a lot of work to do. But I’m committed. Doing the work is a lifelong journey.
Since George Floyd’s murder, we voted in a new administration into the White House that is working to make progress in many areas, including racial inequity.
Yet we continue to see senseless and devastating murders of Black people at the hands of police officers.
There’s been a 2000% increase in violence against Asian Americans and 250 voter suppression laws have been proposed across 43 states.
We obviously have a lot of work to do. This is just the beginning.
To our Black and BIPOC members in the Fiscal Femme community - please know this is a safe space where your voice is encouraged and honored.
To our non-BIPOC members in the Fiscal Femme community - we can and need to continue to do the work. Let’s continue to listen, learn, share resources, and take action. I’d love to share and trade resources so we can all continue to grow and do better.
Hit reply if you are up for sharing. I'll continue to add to this list.
Separately, I'm devastated by the new wave of antisemitic attacks we're seeing in the U.S. and around the globe. The Fiscal Femme stands in solidarity with the Jewish community.
PS Our friend Kara of BravelyGo is hosting a free Financial Feminist Summit on June 5th and 6th. Check out her amazing line up 🔥 and sign up here!
MONEY MOVE OF THE WEEK
PRIORITIZE YOUR GOALS.
If you got a tax refund or bonus check tomorrow, would you feel confident about knowing where to allocate your money? Most of us have multiple financial goals, but contributing to all of them at once isn’t practical.
In trying to achieve all of our goals at once, our progress on each goal will be small (and therefore not motivating!). We want to prioritize our goals by considering which ones are most important to us, are the most urgent, or are more timely.
It can be hard to narrow down our goals, but these steps will help. If you are looking for accountability and inspiration, join us in the Fiscal Femme Slack Community. We can hold you accountable and cheer you on!
YOU GOTTA SEE THIS
THE DONEGOOD CHROME EXTENSION.
Want to know if a company donated to Trump before you purchase their goods or services? Want recommendations for more socially responsible companies when you are shopping online? YES and YES! 👏👏👏👏
DoneGood will automatically search the web for ethical, sustainable brands and products and give you recommendations. Who doesn’t love that?! If you use Chrome, check out the DoneGood chrome extension. If you don’t use Chrome, you can always search the site directly.
I also use two other browser extensions - Rakuten, which automatically gives me cash back on my purchases (when they are available) and Honey, which tests out coupons to find the best discount available on things you’re purchasing online.
