Money Musings 💭 my favorite money secret 💚
When I left my investment banking job for a job that would afford me a better lifestyle, I took a big pay cut. At first, I had no idea how I was going to manage the switch because I had never made a budget and knew nothing about personal finance. It was worth it to me to spend more time with my friends and family and have time to take care of myself, so I figured it out.
Then a few years later, when I was planning to leave my corporate finance job to run the Fiscal Femme full time, I socked away cash into savings like crazy so I could invest in my business (and really pay for myself while my business wasn’t earning enough money). And that was so worth it to me because I was going to get to do work I was incredibly passionate about and live my dream of growing a business.
Switching to a new job with a better lifestyle and going out on my own were two major career decisions that I had the freedom to make because of money.
Many of us (myself included 🙋♀️) believe that dealing with or making “smart” decisions with our money will be restricting or limit our fun. It’s something we have to or should do.
I find the people who have the most success in their financial lives may start there but come to understand that dealing with their money is actually a radical act of self-love.
I’ll say it again. Dealing with or spending time with our money is a radical act of self-love.
Why? Because we’re helping ourselves get what we want most.
It’s a gift.
Once we see that, making decisions in alignment with our goals becomes a lot easier. It’s not something we force ourselves to do. It just becomes a natural choice.
People report they start shopping in their own closet instead of buying new things. Or they take a different route to work and skip the $11 smoothie.
What freedom does money give you? What do you want to create the room for in your life financially?
Money Move of the Week
Unsubscribe from sales emails. When we get emails from our favorite stores saying “new styles 50% off!” it can wreak havoc on our spending and at the very least, wear down our willpower. We probably had no plan to buy something but now we’re on their site, browsing and finding things we “need to have.” We try to talk ourselves out of it, but the sale is almost over and we don’t want to miss a great deal. 😭 We can make our lives so much easier by unsubscribing from store sales emails. 👋 Bye!
When we buy something we don’t want or need, we’re not saving 40% - we’re spending money we wouldn’t have otherwise spent. If it feels too painful to completely unsubscribe, have sales emails go to a special folder that you only see if you check it.
You Gotta See This
Define: BROKERAGE ACCOUNT. A type of account that holds your cash and investments and allows you to buy and sell (ie trade) investments like stocks, bonds, and funds. Use it in a sentence - “I’m going to to open a brokerage account and start investing.” Then, you can go celebrate that you’ve made a big step toward becoming an investor. 💁♀️
