Money Musings: Keep the motivation going πππ
By this time in the New Year most people have given up on their resolutions or goals. Womp womp. π©
While we can make some major strides in a couple months, the key to financial success is in consistency.
Small, consistent steps over time lead to big results.
The good news is, the steps can be small and manageable. The bad news is, weβre never done.
So, how do we keep our money motivation up all year round?
I interviewed 3 incredible experts about staying motivated in Financial Adulting (it comes out in 13 days! π).
Hereβs a taste of what they shared:
Yanely Espinal, YouTuber known as @MissBeHelpful and director of educational outreach at Next Gen Personal Finance shared that for her, reaching her goal of becoming debt free was all about community. She followed inspirational accounts and specific hashtags. She was able to ask questions and get ideas from this community she found on social media.
Chelsea Fagan, founder and CEO of The Financial Diet, a digital media company about personal finance, recommends using rewards and celebrating along the way. When we celebrate our progress along the way, and know exactly what rewards we will get, it can keep us motivated and excited to continue taking steps.
Erin Lowry, author of personal finance series Broke Millennial, shared that she names her bank accounts accordingly to motivate her for a specific goal. For example, "South Africa Trip." It makes transferring money over that much more gratifying!

MONEY MOVE OF THE WEEK
MAP OUT 3 MONTHS WORTH OF MONEY MOVES.
A βFinancial Adultβ is not someone who knows everything about money or never makes mistakes. I still make mistakes all the time. The first part of being a financial adult is taking small, consistent actions that add up to big results.
Letβs start with the first part. It works best if we plan out our money moves in advance so when the time comes to take them, we donβt have to worry about thinking, we can just do.
Given our progress and how life changes, you donβt need to map out more than a few months. Which money moves will you take the next three months? Maybe you want to set up an auto transfer to savings, finally start investing or increase the contributions to your 401(k) by 1%.
Remember, these donβt have to feel overwhelming or big. Weβre looking for small manageable steps so we can be consistent.
If you want me to map these out for you, join the Financial Adulting Challenge that kicks off March 9th.
Youβll receive a weekly money move and video lesson via email and/or text for 15 weeks. Weβll also have a place where we can all get together and hold each other accountable via Slack.
