Every area of our personal finances are connected. When one area suffers, it impacts all the areas. Retirement is one of those areas.
It's expected that half of the people in the United States will not have enough money in retirement. The numbers are far worse for people of color and women.
Money Musings: we have work to do
Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder.
His murder was a turning point for many people and organizations to begin to understand the tragic racial inequities in the United States. It was also a time for folks like myself to look at how our actions (my actions) and inaction have continued to perpetuate and uphold values of white supremacy.
June 2020 was when, as Dr. Cadet taught me, I started really doing the work.
Money Musings: join me for my wild ride
You might have heard that I’m working on writing my next book. And my, oh my, it’s been challenging. 😱
📚 My first book, The 30-Day Money Cleanse, was so much easier to write. After 5 years of teaching my successful 30-Day Money Cleanse program, I was turning it into a book. It just flowed out of me.
This time almost all the content is new.
Money Musings: Alexander McQueen x 6
Have you heard the story about Tiffany Haddish’s $4,000 Alexander McQueen dress? She first wore it to a movie premier in 2017 and went on to wear it five more times at high profile events - as a presenter for the Oscars, the MTV movie awards and when she hosted Saturday Night Live. The scandal!
She said on Saturday Night Live: “I spent a lot of money on this dress! This dress cost way more than my mortgage," she said, relatable as ever. "It’s an Alexander McQueen, it’s a $4,000 dress. I’m gonna wear this dress multiple times—you might see this dress in two sketches tonight."
Money Musings: investing myths, debunked
For many people, the stock market is a scary and intimidating place. That’s by design. For decades it was designed to keep people OUT. I’m partnering with Public.com on a free investing workshop to get more people IN (to get you IN).
If we’re not investing, we’re missing out on hundreds of thousands - if not millions - of dollars over the course of our lifetime. And that’s NOT okay.
Money Musings: celebrate these milestones
Getting married and having babies are beautiful things to celebrate. I celebrate them with friends all the time - and I love doing it! You know there’s a "but" coming, right?
BUT it's pretty crazy that in 2021 there is not more of a focus on celebrating milestones that DO NOT have to do with marriage and motherhood. Marriage and motherhood are both things that celebrate women in relation to other people - a partner and a baby.
Money Musings: the team that makes it possible
As someone who has looked up to and followed the journeys of many successful women for a while now, I used to wonder how they pulled it all off. How was it even possible? 🤔 While many women I know and admire are pulling off wonder-women-level feats, they also often have incredible teams and networks supporting them.
At the Fiscal Femme, I’m the face of the business but I in NO way do this alone. And there is no way I could have accomplished what I have today without my dream team.
Money Musings: it’s time to change investing culture
Money Musings: I want you to earn more
Let's be clear - I want all 65,000 women and allies in the Fiscal Femme community to be wealthy. When women and allies, specifically anti-racist women and allies are wealthy, we’ll solve a lot of the world’s problems.
A big part of becoming wealthy is how much we earn. While how we spend and invest our money is really important (no matter how much we earn), the earnings piece can make saving and investing possible (where it wasn’t before) and help us make significant progress towards our goals.
Money Musings: I have big news!
I have some big news to share… I’M WRITING ANOTHER BOOK.
Yes, I’m yelling lol. But it’s happy yelling. I’m that excited!!! This is a book for YOU about everything we believe in as the Fiscal Femme community. It really is such a privilege and believe it will be a project of a lifetime. I’m so excited to take you along for the ride!
Money Musings: A money mindset secret
I’m thrilled to have Ayana, founder of @millennialmoney.guide, writing today’s Money Musing as our final takeover for Women’s History Month. 🤗
Ayana here from 🙋🏾♀️ 💸 Millennial Money Guide! Can I let you in a little secret? Even the most perfect budget spreadsheet, savings strategies, and debt payoff plans can't fix a broken money mindset 🤭
Money Musings: Women’s History Month
This Women's History Month there is so much going on. 🎉 Cinneah and I are halfway through our roundtable series. For those of you looking to build wealth, this week we have We Choose FI/RE.
Join this roundtable to learn about the FI/RE movement from our perspectives and talk about how women at different stages in our journeys are working towards our goals of financial freedom.
Money Musings: the truth about taxes
Do you find doing your taxes super annoying? I’m with you. It’s not only annoying, it’s complicated and confusing. I always feel like I’m making a mistake or doing something wrong.
So yes, I’m going to host a Q&A with some incredible accountants to demystify taxes but I first want to tell you why your taxes are so complicated to begin with. Tax prep companies like TurboTax (owned by Intuit) and H&R Block lobby millions of dollars each year to keep our taxes complicated. Whaaaa??? 🤯
Money Musings: be fiscally fierce
Money Musings: become a financial activist
As our Black History Month takeovers continue, I’m thrilled to have Dasha Kennedy, founder of @thebrokeblackgirl, writing today’s Money Musing. 🤗
Money Musings: ignoring standard financial advice
As our Black History Month takeovers continue, I’m thrilled to have Jamila Souffrant, founder of Journey to Launch, writing today’s Money Musing. 🤗
Money Musings: are you clear on your goals?
Over the years, I’ve gotten really good at keeping my spending down.
When I want something, I brainstorm if there are other ways to get the same experience (or better) for less money. I pause and give myself at least 48 hours to make sure I really want it. I think about the opportunity cost (i.e. what else I could I do with that money).
And believe me… despite all of that, I still make mistakes and purchase things I regret.
Money Musings: How do you afford to travel?
To commemorate Black History Month, we’ve asked some of our favorite, most inspiring voices in the $$$ world to take over the Fiscal Femme Money Musing and our Instagram. We’re so excited to have Cinneah kicking us off this week! Check her out on Instagram and hear from her below.
Cinneah’s Reflection: “How do you afford to travel?” was the question I frequently received from peers, and family alike whenever I would post a travel pic on the ‘Gram. I was working an entry-level position in NYC and honestly, not managing my money well. I was living off of credit cards, swiping for everything from brunch to uber rides, and digging myself into a hole - over $10,000 deep.
Money Musings: my dream for you
Before I decided what the Fiscal Femme $$$ School would look like, I started with my goal for the program. What would you achieve over the course of the 12-months? What would your life look and feel like at the end of it? From there, I created the curriculum and support it would take to get there.
Imagine this… You get home from work (or log off your computer for the day #covidlife) and have some free time. You do whatever you like to do to relax. Turn on your latest show, open a book or start cooking your favorite dinner. But something’s missing…
Money Musings: small steps for the win
As a bit of a Type A person, I often go after goals in an aggressive way. An example: If I got inspired to reorganize my apartment after watching the Home Edit series on Netflix, I’d typically go all in for a weekend or two and just get it done. I might even clear some of my work schedule. 😂
With the current pandemic, having a second child and not having childcare, this wasn’t happening. Finding large chunks of time took major planning and maneuvering.f rioters. It was an image I had only seen on the news reporting in other countries - countries without democracy.
